Photo: Index Open The Niagara Icewine Festival celebrates this wintry harvest with a 10-day festival featuring grape picking, wine tastings, winery tours, and gala dinners. The next festival will be held January 18 to 27, 2008, with ticket prices varying by event. This year's festival, on September 1 and 2, will spotlight contests galore, including two hot sauce recipe competitions (traditional and creative), wing eating championships, and a beauty pageant. Taking place in Chicago's Grant Park from June 29 to July 8, the festival offers sample dishes from more than 70 area restaurants and cooking demonstrations by local chefs. The other main draw? Daily live music, including nationally known acts such as Kenny Rogers, John Mayer, and The Black Crowes. Admission is free; purchase tickets (11 for $7) to sample the festival's wares. Photo: City of Chicago For 11 days in September, New York's Little Italy turns into a rollicking street fair for the Feast of San Gennaro. 2007 marks the festival's 80th year of serving cannoli, sausage, pizza, and other Italian specialties in honor of the patron saint of Naples. More than 300 street vendors, plus area restaurants, will be participating; there also will be a cannoli-eating competition, live music concerts, and a procession. The festival dates are September 13 through 23, and admission is free. This year's festival features duck boat tours, a parade, clam shucking contests, and live music daily. And the dishes available for sampling include New England's finest: lobster and scallop rolls, crab cakes, whoopie pies, and clams of all varieties, to name just a few possibilities. Photo: Mike Leonard Vampires, beware: The annual Gilroy Garlic Festival in Gilroy, California, serves up more than two tons of fresh garlic, with dishes including garlic fries, garlic calamari, and even garlic ice cream, chocolate, and kettle corn. There's also an Iron Chef cook-off, a "Garlic Idol" singing competition, and more than 50 live concerts scheduled. Honoring the orchards of surrounding Yuba County, this festival includes a two-day street fair, a peach-and-pancake breakfast, a 5K run/walk, and live music. Admission is free, and this year's festival is scheduled for July 20 and 21. Photo: Christopher Nelson Oregon's Newport Seafood & Wine Festival, established in 1978, is an annual winter festival that highlights the region's bounty of the sea and vine. Among the events are wine competitions (both commercial and amateur); wine tastings from California, Oregon, and Washington vintners; and seafood dishes with local Dungeness crab, calamari, and salmon. The festival is held the last full weekend of February each year; admission in 2007 ranged from $7 to $13, depending on day of attendance. The Twin Cities Food & Wine Experience returns to the Minneapolis Convention Center for its 14th annual show. Three hundred exhibitors will be on hand to offer food and wine samplings. Local and national celebrity chef demonstrations, a Whole Foods-sponsored sustainable and organic foods section and stage, and cookbook signings are also scheduled.
