10 Best Places to Go in Mexico

Nestled among the Sierra Madre Mountains and providing more than 40 miles of coastline, Puerto Vallarta offers a plethora of outdoor activities set against a scenic backdrop. Plus, the city is a cultural mecca for art, cuisine, and music, which is why it's not surprising so many readers claim this as their number one spot for a tropical getaway.

The weather is perfect with an endless number of outdoor activities to stay busy having fun. Numerous spas and malls for those not interested in outdoor activities. It truly is heaven on earth."

Reader "VisitNewport" said, "The 'Juan & only' place I love is Puerto Vallarta. My heart was captured the first time I saw the color-filled sunsets illuminating over the Bay of Banderas. I have held adorable tiger cubs at the zoo; rode the seas in a panga to view a mother whale with her baby and having dolphin pods leaping alongside; afternoon stroll along the sea side Malecon leads to an evening filled with tempting sounds and smells of street vendors and restaurants to come eat, enjoy the live music of mariachi, blues, or 'tequila reggae.' The main square, a kaleidoscope of activity; children practicing their folklorico dances; mimes; couples salsa dancing; 'Flying Indians' spiral down a 40-foot pole. These are my 'rocking chair memories.'"

Isla Mujeres, Mexico

Located just a short ferry ride from the hustle and bustle of hip and happening Cancun, Isla Mujeres couldn't feel farther away. The small island is a favorite among readers for its historic charm and laid-back atmosphere. Plus, there are plenty of places to shop, eat, drink, or take a siesta.

Reader "chipladylamb" said, "My favorite spot would be Isla Mujeres, a small island off Cancun Mexico. It's called 'the isle of women' and has a romantic tale about a pirate who fell in love with a local woman and loved her [for] his entire life. The island has few cars, and carts, scooters, or bikes are the mode of transport. The fishermen teach their family ... their art, and as they grow old [they] cook wonderful fresh meals (at a great price) while the younger sons go out and fish. It's a wonderful place and reminds me of Mexico 50 years ago. The motels are family run and a great way to relax and enjoy true Mexico. The moped rentals are very inexpensive as are the meals. There is snorkel diving and many fun activities."

Reader "RainhaMom" said, "Isla Mujeres equals paradise found! Perfect for those wanting a more peaceful alternative to the 'spring-breakiness' of Cancun. Our hotel, the Roca Mar, gave us an expansive view of the ocean. We enjoyed the sound of the waves crashing on the rocks so much that we left our balcony sliding glass doors open at night. We sipped coffee on the balcony and watched the sun rise and the ships passing by in the distance. We feasted on barbecued fish or fish stew every day. We spent days and evenings on the beach and developed a perfect cycle of beach activity: swim, read, nap, eat, swim, read, nap, and eat. On day three, I felt my shoulders release, as I finally relaxed into the warmth of the island. This is definitely a spot for those who truly want to relax. Bring a book."

Oaxaca, Mexico

Located in southeastern Mexico, Oaxaca has become a top spot for food lovers, history buffs, and cultural enthusiasts. The area provides mountains, beaches, caverns, jungles, and architectural gems for visitors to explore and enjoy. Our readers believe Oaxaca is a true embodiment of the essence of the country.

Reader "itravel4music" said, "Oaxaca. Because it offers some of the best of nearly all that Mexico has to offer, from the Indian ruins at Monte Alban (and elsewhere) to the colonial architecture of numerous churches, convents, and monasteries, through crafts villages each devoted to a different type of craft (rugs, ceramics, wood carving), great food and near natural landmarks including Hierve el Agua and the rainforests in Juarez."

Fabulous handcrafted art, historic ruins, beautiful city with friendly people, and the aroma of spices that fill the air make your mouth water for the wonderful food there. Tulum, Mexico

Tulum is most often thought of as only the archeological ruins, which have made it famous, but it also offers endless beaches, a wildlife reserve, craft markets, restaurants, and outdoor activities. Our readers love its historic sites as well as its small town feel.

Reader "butterda" said, "I highly recommend Tulum, south of Cancun, where you can experience beautiful beaches, delicious food, and have easy access to many other fantastic places in the Yucatan. There are many hotels to stay along the main beach road and you can have your pick—more rustic (hammocks and solar powered electricity) or more upscale. From the beach or town of Tulum, you can take day trips to the ruins in Tulum, Coba, and Chichen Itza, or visit the colonial town of Valladolid. You can also take a tour through the Sian Kaan Biosphere, a 1.3 million acre wildlife reserve. We used Community Tours Sian Kaan, a non-profit organization that gives back to the Maya community who live there. We also visited many cenotes, limestone sinkholes, near all of the above sites. It's best to rent a car though."

Reader "aguadelmar" said, "Tulum, Mexico! In the morning, you can walk/run for miles on its pristine white beaches and barely encounter another! Yoga? There are many properties along the beach which have yoga studios/huts. We've been taking our family there for years and love it! Also great for couples! Perfect waves for boogie boarding and the sand never gets hot. There are many nice properties on Tulum beach, but our favorite is Sueños Tulum. Sueños has a pool which is a rare find and is perfect if you have younger children and want a swimming option if the sea is rough. CESiaK, inside the Sian Kaan Biosphere is a must at sunset for the views and photos. Posada Margherita has homemade pasta and fresh seafood. For a larger group, rent a condo/house in Puerto Aventuras up the coast and day trip to Tulum!"

Akumal, Mexico

Not far from Cancun, Akumal gives a new meaning to the word "getaway." Translated as the "place of the turtle" in the Mayan language, this spot is an ideal location to reconvene with nature, especially of the aquatic persuasion. The small town provides a home base for those who want to soak up the sun, snorkel, or splash around in the Akumal Bay or Yal Kul Lagoon.

Reader "sweetscholar" said, "Akumal is just about perfect. Beaches are great; it's [a] very small (population 300); the lagoon is a fantastic place to snorkel; ruins are nearby; as well as snorkeling in an underwater river. Local culture and cuisine abound. Turtle headquarters provide educational opportunity. People are friendly. Great place to visit!"

Reader "byouzwak" said, "Akumal is our favorite spot in Mexico. We were able to rent a condo there for three weeks while we helped at the Hakab de biblioteca, a locally run Mayan library. We spent Halloween and the Day [of the Dead] with the children who go there. Besides being able to share their culture, we had the most beautiful beach a few steps away. We swam with turtles and lay under palm trees. The small restaurants that are in this area are superb. We walked to everything including Yal Kul Lagoon. A true paradise and wonderful cultural experience."

Cozumel, Mexico

Known the world over for its crystal-clear waters and coral reef, Cozumel boasts a plethora of water sports, including snorkeling, kayaking, surfing, deep-sea fishing, and diving, in a pristine setting. Our readers flock to this tropical locale to feel the wind in their faces and taste the salt of the ocean.

Reader "krishelle" said, "The color of the water in Cozumel is phenomenal! Snorkeling there is a must. And try the fabulous shrimp tacos from the street vendors. They are worth the risk."

Reader browningwd said, "Cozumel. It is only a little ways across from Cancun, but it is as different as night and day. You can mingle with the native people there and celebrate in the town square every Sunday night. There is also very good diving here. Real laid back. [You] can venture into town for a night of lively activities. Ocean is so beautiful and calm here, [with] no seaweed like in Cancun and very little commercialization. Very calm and relaxing. We have been to Cancun, Puerto Vallarta, but Cozumel is the best!!!!!!"

Mazatlan, Mexico

Only 745 miles from the Arizona border, Mazatlan is an affordable hop, skip, and a jump from the United States to a different world. Our readers rejoice in its activities tailored to suit anyone's needs, including beach sports, fine dining, hiking, shopping, and sightseeing.

Reader "bchicago" said, "My favorite place is Mazatlan. Last year we had the best time—the food was fantastic and CHEAP, believe me really the best shrimp in the world. [At] a local place called Fat Fish, we had drinks, salads, shrimp platters, ribs, baked potato, and including a generous tip [came to] $42 for four adults. To get around you flag down golf carts with a fixed price no matter how long it takes. Very safe. Friendly people. How great to go somewhere where the dollar is strong."

Reader "bagabundo" said, "Our favorite place in Mexico is Mazatlan and Pueblo Bonito Resort in the Golden Zone. Lovely architecture, friendly staff, and clean beach. The city is lovely with great places to explore in the city center. It is laid back and a great place to unwind."

Zihuatanejo, Mexico

Referred to as the perfect escape in the movie, Shawshank Redemption, Zihuatanejo lives up to its Hollywood fame. The small fishing village sits about 15 minutes from the lively city of Ixtapa, making it the perfect place to unwind yet still be near all the action. Our readers love the dual options of the two cities, as well as the laid-back atmosphere of the bay.

Reader "Dianne W" said, "My favorite by far is the Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo area. Ixtapa is the newer resort area and Zihuatanejo is the older 'real Mexico' town. There are wide, fine sand, beautiful beaches. The weather and water are always warm. The people are friendly. It has a real small-town atmosphere and it is safe to walk around the entire area, even at night. There are many nice beachfront inexpensive hotels and condos to choose from and you can go out to eat/drink without spending a lot of money. Shopping always results in finding very inexpensive and unique items. There are also great picturesque calm beaches for swimming and other beaches perfect for bodyboarding. Las Gatas and Ixtapa Island have great snorkeling and great little palapa restaurants. The deep sea fishing is also excellent. There is a paved and well-maintained walking/biking trail that goes through a beautiful tropical jungle. The sunsets over the Pacific Ocean in Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo are some of the most beautiful in the world. I have been on the Picante' sunset cruise a few times and it is always a blast. There are many other fun activities in the area, such as horseback riding and ATV tours and tours of coconut plantations and small mountain towns."

Reader "letsgonow" said, "Zihuatenajo is a charming fishing village with great restaurants and old-world charm. Stay in Ixtapa where hotels and resorts abound and grab a taxi to sleepy Zihuatanejo! The sailfishing is decent, too!"

Cabo San Lucas, Mexico

Though many may equate Cabo San Lucas as a party haven, the area offers a great deal more than tequila shooters and all night dancing. Our readers love its food, fishing, outdoor sports, and beaches, as well as the occasional margarita.

Reader "joyandherb" said, "We just got back from Cabo San Lucas! What a beautiful place! We stayed at Welk Resort - Sirena Del Mar. It's a small resort with a semi-private beach, great food, and a delightful, relaxing atmosphere. It's a short bus or taxi ride to town and all bartering, whale watching, sunset cruises, wave runners, and ATV tours. But you can go back to the quiet resort and relax on the beach, swim in the pools, or just hang out in the huge hot tub."

Reader "dochages" said, "Favorite place is Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The fishing is amazing, the food is great, and the nightlife is fun, varied, and energetic. It has taken 20 years of visits to find some of the off-the-path local eateries that we really enjoy. Travel in the southern Baja in the surrounding 100 mile radius is beautiful, desolate, and scenic. The people are friendly and kind. Even in remote areas, you feel safe."

Manzanillo, Mexico

Located more than 500 miles west of Mexico City, Manzanillo has been making its mark as a top tourist spot since the 1970s. Our readers come for the beaches and fishing, and consider this city a valuable find among the vacation destinations in the country.

Reader "ruginiz" said, "The absolute best place in all of Mexico is Manzanillo. It is a jewel situated on the pacific Mexican Riviera. Beauty, diversity, and beautiful beaches, Manzanillo has it all. The sailfish capital of the world. Some of the best food in existence. Has the best climate of all Mexican destinations. How do I know? I've traveled extensively throughout Mexico. I discovered Manzanillo in 1986 and have returned/lived here ever since! Mark my words ... 'You can't come here just once!'"

Reader "JaniceW" said, "Manzanillo, Colima, Mexico is my favorite place to visit in Mexico. Sun-washed, sparkling white buildings dot the hillsides overlooking the harbor, which has a seaside walk that is replete with statues. It's just beautiful. The former industrial town is up and coming in the tourist industry and the people there are kind and work hard for their livelihoods. As of fall 2009, their cruise ship terminal was under construction. There are so many beautiful resorts—Las Hadas, Tesoro, and more (stay away from Club Maeva, which is cheesy and awful). I will definitely go back to Manzanillo, which to me is like a Pacific coast jewel that few people know about."

It is a town for those who appreciate art, great food, great festivals, and colonial architecture! There are many gorgeous hotels to choose from as well as small casas and large haciendas for rent! We like to take our family there for a month for Spanish and art classes!"

Reader "janeg2007" loves Rio Caliente, and said, "The best place to go in Mexico for a wonderful and relaxing trip is Rio Caliente outside of Guadalajara. Rio is an oasis in a state park. Wonderful hot springs from the local volcano heat the pool. Great hikes in the mountains every morning before a wonderful and healthy breakfast. Clean casitas are where you stay. Lots of yoga and spa treatments if you want. Also trips into town. Wonderful, clean, and inexpensive. I have been there three times and want to go back!"

Reader "LindyMegan" is a fan of Playa Carrizalillo, and said, "Playa Carrizalillo is a haven among the resorts along the coastline of Mexico. One of the northernmost beaches of Puerto Escondido. No more than a dozen people are ever on the beach at a time. Chairs and umbrellas abound with locals ready to serve you a freshly hacked coconut or a plate of grilled shrimp. Gentle waves and a slow slope into the water make it a perfect place to lie on your back and float along. It's also a great cove to watch the sunset from—be sure to look behind you as you hike back up the steep staircase built into the cliff wall. The view is breathtaking."
