It was inevitable that, sooner or later, Uber would start awarding airline- or hotel-program points for using its service. It turns out to be sooner rather than later, and the loyalty points in question are from the Starwood Preferred Guest program.
Effective immediately SPG members can earn one point for every $1 spent on Uber rides, and even more when the ride coincides with a Starwood stay: two points per $1 for non-elites, three points for Gold and Platinum elites, and four points for Platinum 75 members.
Points will be awarded for a maximum of $10,000 in Uber spend annually.
To earn points for rides, travelers must link their SPG and Uber accounts. Additionally, and potentially a more significant hurdle, SPG members must have at least one eligible Starwood stay during 2015 to earn points with Uber.
Uber users can also earn Membership Rewards points for rides when paying with an eligible American Express card, so Uber obviously sees loyalty program tie-ups as an important component in its marketing efforts. Which means that Uber users can look forward to more miles and points opportunities in the future, and probably sooner rather than later.
