Well, this is comforting: According to a new report, the TSA completely and utterly failed a test conducted by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The TSA allowed undercover DHS officers who were carrying fake explosives or fake weapons to pass through airport security 67 out of 70 times.
(Think about that statistic next time the TSA takes away your 4 oz. water bottle or makes you take off your flip flops at security.)
According to a report from ABC News, in one incident, an undercover agent carrying a fake bomb strapped to his back set off an alarm at an airport body scanner. A TSA officer gave the undercover agent a pat down, and then sent him (with undetected the fake bomb) on to board his flight.
The tests were conducted “recently,” and apparently additional security measures have now been put in place to plug these security gaps.
The Department of Homeland Security issued a written statement in response to the test, saying, “Upon learning the initial findings of the Office of Inspector General’s report, Secretary Johnson immediately directed TSA to implement a series of actions, several of which are now in place, to address the issues raised in the report.”
