Inside, it's all about the deep leather chairs, cast-iron fireplaces, cigars, cognac, and restaurant KANU, with a standout menu of North American fish and game.

Walk into the lobby of the Waldorf Astoria Park City and your Utah escape will begin with a gentle, earthy, leatherwood aroma. You know your Adirondack mountain retreat is going to be on point when it was built a century ago by an OG Rockefeller (William Avery Rockefeller, to be exact). Accommodations are spread throughout the Casa Grande (a former private residence with a full-blown ballroom and guest rooms that casually feature early 19th- and 20th-century Steinway pianos), the Costilla Lodge (25 miles from the main lodge, at an elevation of 10,200 feet), Casa Minor (another former residence with a sun porch and roomy loft), and six private guest houses with hotel-style amenities. Sitting on 585,000 acres of prime Southwestern land also has its distinct perks. Unwind in an Adirondack chair on the porch of your choosing and keep your eyes peeled for herds of elk, deer, antelope, bison, and Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, some of which occasionally stop by the Vermejo River for a drink. As for human food and drink, there's New Mexico ranch fare from chef Wes Coffel who sources seasonal produce right from the ranch's on-site garden.
