Shop at Klonghae Floating Market
No trip to Hat Yai would be complete without a stop at the Klonghae floating market. Particularly for those from Western cultures, this is an experience unlike anything you’ve ever seen, one that’s definitely not to be missed. Vendors line up their boats along the banks of the Klonghae River, offering food, clothing, souvenirs, and other wares. If you prefer to stay on dry land, you’ll also find a number of traditional markets throughout the city, so you should have no trouble finding anything you need.
Admire the Buddha Statues
There are magnificent Buddha statues scattered throughout Hat Yai. You’ll find the Standing Buddha at the top of a hill in the Hat Yai Municipal Park, gleaming gold in the sunshine. The Buddha at Wat Mahapanya Vidaya is another must-see. This temple is set in a picturesque park. The Wat Hat Yai Nai temple houses the third largest-reclining Buddha in the country, so it should definitely top your list as well.
Visit Beaches and Waterfalls
There are beaches less than an hour outside of Hat Yai, so don’t miss this opportunity to take advantage of Thailand’s beautiful weather and soak up some sun. For more stunning natural beauty, another short drive from the city will bring you to the Ton Nga Chang Wildlife Domestic Reserve, home of the multi-tiered Elephant Tusks Waterfall. Take some time to breathe in the fresh air and marvel at the power of this magnificent waterfall.
Get a Thai Massage
There’s no shortage of Thai massage parlors in Hat Yai. You’ll also find a number of foot reflexology centers where you can have your feet pampered after a long day of wandering through the city’s busy streets. To complete your day of pampering, get your hair professionally styled at one of the city’s many beauty parlors. All of these pampering services are remarkably inexpensive by Western standards.
