Morro Bay sits along the coast in Southern California. Though the city is relatively small, there are still a number of things to do and attractions you must see in Morro Bay before leaving.

The Waterfront

The natural bay extends some four miles from Morro Rock to the south. Morro Rock itself stands 576 feet tall and marks the entrance to the Morro Bay Harbor. The rock is the northern most of the nine major peaks that make up the “Nine Sisters.” These nine major peaks, along with numerous smaller peaks and hills, were created some 20 million years ago by a unique line of volcanic plugs. At its peak, Morro Bay was a significant fishing area. Even today, halibut, sole, rockfish, albacore, and others marine life are fished commercially and for sport. Oysters are farmed artificially in the shallow back bay.

Visitors to the area may want to spend time at Morro Bay State Park. The park sits a couple of miles away from Morro Bay itself, but is a well-developed park that is frequently used by local residents. Most of the park lies away from the coast, but there is a marina where you can hire canoes and kayaks.

History

Built in the 1960s, the Museum of Natural History has remained relevant through continual additions and renovations, including exhibits of the local wildlife and fauna, and expanse views of the bay. Entry fees are $2 for adults and free to children ages 16 and under.

Visitors to the area can also visit Hearst Castle, just 30 minutes north of Morro Bay in San Simeon. It is the famous palace of William Randolph Hearst, who used it to host movies stars, heads of state, and other people of note. It is now a tourist attraction but worth seeing if you’re along the coast. Five tours of Hearst Castle are available. These tours rang frome the experience tour, which provides a general overview of the castle, to tours of the upper floors, the north wing, Casa Del Monte, and the gardens. Guided tours are $20 to $30 per adult depending on the tour you choose and the season.
