Avoiding Dubai Tourist Traps
Dubai has burst on the scene as a major destination for opulence and excitement. However, there are some major tourist traps you can and should avoid. Here are a few tips to skipping them and enjoying yourself.
Put Away That Camera
Did you bring a large camera (aka larger than your cell phone or a point-and-shoot)? If so, you might not be able to use it: Many sites will ask you to stop filming, from the mall to the aquarium. If you want great pictures you should bring a small, unassuming camera that can still capture your favorite memories.
Avoid the Overpriced Burj Khalifa Tower Photos
When you visit the Burj Khalifa Tower, you’ll be asked if you want to spring for a souvenir photo. There are a few different photo options, including one of you climbing on the outside of the glass like you’re straight out of a Mission Impossible movie. These pictures are overpriced and it’s best to just skip them unless you want to overpay.
The Taxi
When hiring a cab ask for them to start the meter, or, if one’s not visible, if they have a meter. If the driver says no or refuses to turn it on, get out of the car. Drivers quoting you a price will overcharge.
Avoid Zoos
Wild animals such as lions and tigers are a status symbol here, yet many of the animals are taken care of in extremely poor conditions. Going to many of these zoos simply supports the individuals who mistreat animals who will die young in captivity. If you go to a zoo, go to a reputable zoo: look into how the animals live and are treated before you go.
Test the Web
Do you work online and want to do so in Dubai? You may not be able to log onto certain websites here: Many domains are blocked, including any kind of adult-only or alcohol-related content. It’s a good idea to install a quality IP address blocker on your computer if you’ll be needing access to certain sites: this can prevent outside websites from seeing your computer’s origin. You can also use services that give you a different IP address, which makes it possible to access the websites you need.
