Lagos Warnings and Dangers
A visit to Africa should include a visit to the city of Lagos. It is the capital city of Nigeria, one of the most developed countries in Africa, and one of the biggest cities on the continent. Like any large city, there are some precautions visitors should take.

Amateur Photographers Beware
Those who love to take pictures while they are on vacation should be cautious in Lagos since photography is frowned upon. Many people have been scolded and even had their cameras taken away when attempting to take pictures. This is especially true when taking a picture with someone in the frame. Pictures of the historic colonial buildings in the area are also not allowed. If you are going to be bold and attempt to take pictures, be surreptitious about it, especially around government buildings with guards. They will not hesitate to take away your camera. Some people have even been physically harmed by guards when taking pictures.
Avoid Credit Card Scams
When you are in Nigeria, do not use your credit card. Local merchants in the country sometimes overcharge people’s credit cards, even into the thousands of dollars. Nowhere is safe from this, including five-star hotels in the city. Put your credit card away after withdrawing cash, which you should rely on.
Pickpockets
Like any other heavily populated city, there is the potential to get pick pocketed in Lagos. Over 17 million people live in the city, so there are going to be some very crowded areas. These are the parts of town in which travelers should be especially careful. The city is safe during the day, but you should be extremely careful at night. Also, never leave valuable items sitting unattended while you are out at any time.
Political Unrest
The country is constantly in a state of political unrest, meaning riots and protests break out all the time in most heavily populated cities. They can spring up unpredictably, but your hotel staff should be able to tell you which areas of town to avoid. Like other dangers, the best idea is not to leave tourist areas at night, unless you are with a local or someone providing security. Don’t go out at night alone.
Swimming
Be careful swimming. The tide along the Atlantic coast of Nigeria is known for its dangerous riptides and only the most experienced swimmers will be safe in these waters. The view along these beaches is great, but avoid going too far out into the water.
