Beaches
Albufeira’s beaches are its most popular feature, and for good reason. You can expect to find beautiful views, gorgeous sandstone cliffs, and plenty of water-based activities to entertain yourself. When you visit the Old Town section of Albufeira, you’ll be able to explore two connected beaches, Praia do Tunel and Praia dos Pescadores. You can access Praia do Tunel via a manmade tunnel carved into the cliffs, while Praia dos Pescadores is accessed by escalators that descend from the cliffs.
Both beaches are very clean, but especially so in the mornings. Each morning, beach tractors plough the sand and remove any litter so that the beach remains pristine-looking. Make sure that you take a walk along the boarded walkway that runs the length of both beaches. You can rent a sunbed, or stop at one of the beachside bars or restaurants for refreshment. You’ll also enjoy swimming in the crystal clear water. Be sure to wear sandals or flip-flops, because the sand can get very hot on your feet during the summer months.
Old Town
Albufeira is a city with a long history. It was once home to a Roman villa, and much later was the site of a Medieval castle that was destroyed in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. If you’re interested in the history and architecture of the city, the Old Town section has plenty to offer. Explore the winding avenues and narrow alleyways. You’ll find restaurants serving delicious food and outdoor cafes where you can sit with a cup of coffee or glass of wine while you relax and people-watch.
If you like live music, you’ll be able to find plenty of it; it’s common for live bands to perform inside the bars or even outside of the establishments. There’s also Jardim Square, where you can watch buskers perform for the tourists in exchange for tips. Make sure that you visit the Clock Tower, which was built on the site of an old castle gate. The bell in the clock tower chimes on the hour, and it’s supported by intricate metalworking that serves as a symbol of the town itself.
Tourist Train
If you’re looking for a way to get an overview of the city before deciding where to go, Albufeira’s tourist train offers a brief but fun tour. You’ll pass over cliffs, around hotels and shops, through the Strip, and past a number of interesting buildings and sculptures. For an additional fee, you can rent earphones so that you can hear commentary on the city. There are two different trains, and they run every 20 minutes during the busy tourist season. If you’re visiting off-season, you can still ride the train but it runs less frequently.
