Tips on Avoiding Maldives Tourist Traps

Maldives Tourist Traps

The Maldives are a ring of tropical islands in the Indian Ocean that are ideal for a relaxing vacation. People come from all over the world to take in the white sand beaches and undisturbed nature. Despite being in paradise, there are some tourist traps to be aware of.

Alcohol

Bringing alcohol to Maldives is prohibited. Stay at all-inclusive resorts or expect to pay an exorbitant amount for alcohol. Many all-inclusive resorts do not include wine in their alcohol package. It can be difficult to find branded liquors too, as only locally made alcohol options are widely available.

Water

Bottled water is extremely expensive in Maldives and tourists have reported paying upwards of $10 for 1.5 liters of water. You can try to bring your own water with you depending on where you are traveling from, or you can opt for juice at meals. Try to eat as much fresh fruit as possible to ensure that you are fully hydrated.

Souvenirs

While they may be everywhere for tourists to purchase, do not buy the sea shells and dried corals available. The sale of these souvenirs is permitted within Maldives, but once you try to take these items to your own country you will be hit with heavy fines. Many merchants in Maldives will even try to sell you “certified” shells and corals, but also may not be allowed.

Tipping

If you are staying at a resort there’s often a ten percent service fee added to every purchase. This means the bar, the hotel room, and the restaurant all have an additional ten percent charge added on. If you add a tip to this, you are effectively tipping 20 to 30 percent.
