Richmond Things To Do
Charming Richmond, Virginia has been a favored destination for visitors since Colonial times. Today, the metropolitan area is home to more than a million people, and is still popular with vacationers. From the canals, to the home of the Confederacy, Richmond makes a fine place to enjoy many aspects of historic and contemporary Southern culture.
See the Canals
Richmond is a city of Canals. George Washington saw the James River could not be used without them, so a system was developed for use that is still in place today. Canal boat tours are a popular way to see the city and learn about its history. Tours run on the hour from early spring to late fall. Once you’re done, head back for dry land for a canal walk. Along they way, you’ll see much of the city and walk across many footbridges.
The White House of the Confederacy
Another part of the city that you will want to see on foot is the White House of the Confederacy. This is where Jefferson Davis governed his armies during the Civil War. It’s been purchased and restored by the Confederate Memorial Literary Society and is now home to a museum. Take a guided tour to learn the history of the building and how it was used by the Union in the aftermath of the war. The museum is also home to a lovely garden dedicated to the flowers of the Southern United States.
Civil War buffs might also enjoy a visit to the historic Monument Avenue. The Avenue is an example of the Grand American Avenue city planning style, and the grassy mall dozens of statues honoring Virginia’s Confederate leaders.
Capital Square
Virginia is home to eight American presidents. The capital square aims to bring them to life with detailed exhibits about the life of each one. The square is home to several historic buildings, including the Thomas Jefferson designed, State Capital Building. Guided tours are a popular way to explore the history of this building, which date back to 1788.
The Executive Mansion is another picturesque building in the area. Built in 1811, it is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Check out the Old City Hall building nearby that dates from 1894.
The Edgar Allan Poe Museum
This is not where the poet and inventor of the horror story was born or lived but it is right near where he worked. Housed in one of Richmond’s oldest buildings, the museum shows off his work and many of his possessions. You can tour the house and then explore the adjacent gardens.
