Transportation in Tijuana: Taxi Cab
Tijuana, located just south of San Diego, is one of the fastest growing cities in Mexico and is a center for culture, arts, economics, politics, and education. If you are going to visit Tijuana by walking across the border and rely on taxi cabs to get around, here are some things you should know.
Safest Form of Transportation
The safest way to get around in Tijuana is by using one of the Yellow Cabs located right at the border as soon as you cross. All the Yellow Cab drivers are insured and are registered. They are also one of the only companies that require their drivers to take random drug tests. Most of the drivers speak perfect English and, those who don’t, do understand enough English to get you around.
Cost of a Taxi
The prices for the Yellow Cabs has surprisingly gone down over the past few years since they now have a set amount they can only charge to go to different areas in Tijuana. Before the changes, drivers were allowed to charge whatever they thought a passenger was willing to pay. They also now have special prices to go downtown from the border if you are willing to share the taxi with other people. Otherwise, the price to go downtown by yourself in a cab is only a few dollars higher. You can find all the prices to where you need to go on a board located at the taxi stand at the border. If you are overcharged by a Yellow taxi driver, and you report the driver to company officials, the driver will have to return the amount you were overcharged and the driver will be disciplined.
Getting to a Taxi
Due to the new entrance into Tijuana, you need to walk across the bridge on the Mexican side to get to the Yellow taxis that offer special prices. If you continue to walk straight after crossing the border you will also run into more Yellow Cabs, but these taxis charge full price. All of the official drivers for the Yellow taxis wear long sleeved yellow shirts with black dress pants, and on Friday and Saturday nights the drivers must wear a black tie.
Taxis to Avoid
Never take one of the Taxis driving around the border seeking customers. These taxis usually are not registered and the drivers often do not meet the regulatory requirements to drive a taxi. You should never get into a taxi that looks suspicious and/or the driver is not wearing some type of official dress uniform.
