Lagos is a city located in the country of the same name, the Nigerian state of Lagos. It has one of the largest urban populations in the world, and so there are many attractions and things to do for visitors to the area.

The Waterfront

Lagos is surrounded by some of the most beautiful beaches of Algarve. Dona Ana is one of them. While it’s within walking distance from town, it’s best to find accommodation in nearby hotels and apartments. This provides easy access to the shoreline. There is also Praia da Batata, a small beach that lies to the south of Fortaleza da Ponta da Bandeira. It’s just a stone’s throw from the city walls. It’s a small beach tucked between two small cliffs, where the river meets the Atlantic Ocean. It is also known by the small music festivals that take place there during Summer. Interestingly, its name means potato beach.

If you are looking to get away from the crowds in Lagos, you should take a hike up the coast. Head west of the town and follow the main road up a small hill until you see signs for beach access. There is a trail that runs along the coast for a couple miles and leads to a nice lighthouse. Eventually, you’ll also find some grottos from where you can enjoy the sunset. This makes for a great walk. Even if you don’t go the whole way around, you can still get great views of the cliffs and rocky islands.

Lagos sits at the mouth of the Bensafrim River, which gives it access to a marina and both fishing and commercial ports. At the very mouth of the river sits the Fortaleza da Ponta da Bandeira, a small square fort built at the end of the 17th century. You can walk down the entire length of the river in Lagos thanks to a nice riverside promenade.

Historic Structures

The Fortress of Sagres looks like just a large fort from the outside, but inside is a national monument and Natural Park. You can expect to spend at least two hours here if you walk around the whole site. Near the point where the River Bensafrim enters the sea is the Forte da Ponta da Bandeira, constructed in the 17th century. It is rectangular in layout with small corner turrets and a drawbridge. Today, the fortress houses a museum devoted to the Portuguese Age of Discovery, with exhibits that include displays of maritime history, astrolabes, and models of caravels. There is also a small chapel in the courtyard dedicated to Santa Barbara.
