New Jersey Off the Beaten Path
Popular tourist locations in New Jersey attract many visitors. However, there are also great off-the-beaten-path attractions in NJ for those who enjoy getting away from the hustle and bustle of city life and casinos.
Lucy the Elephant
Lucy is a six story tall architectural structure constructed in 1882 in the shape of an elephant. Constructed of wood and tin, Lucy towers over visitors in Margate New Jersey, her permanent historic home. Lucy once housed a restaurant, a tavern, a hotel and other businesses over the years.
When Lucy fell into a state of disrepair in the 1960s, local officials soon discovered that plans to demolish her were met with great disapproval. A “Save Lucy” campaign resulted in scrapping the demolition plans and making Lucy a permanent resident.
Ft. Hancock barracks, Sandy Hook
In its heyday, Fort Hancock served as officer’s barracks. Visitors now marvel at the inside of the military complex, which features stunning mantles, beautifully detailed woodwork and staircases.
Visit during the holidays to enjoy fully decorated, fresh-cut Christmas trees inside the buildings.
High Point Monument
The High Point Monument sits atop High Point summit, the highest point in New Jersey. Paid for by Col. Anthony Dryden Kruser, who donated the land, the monument serves as a memorial to all U.S. war veterans.
The monument, made of granite and quartz, is 220 feet high. Visitors can view three different states from the observation windows at the top of High Point Monument.
Oyster Creek
Located just 10 miles north of Atlantic City, Oyster Creek features one of the least-disturbed marine wetlands habitats in the northeastern U.S.
It also houses the oldest operating nuclear power plant in the country.
