Konigsallee

If Dusseldorf is a shopping paradise, then the upscale stretch of shopping malls and department stores along the Konigsallee – or the “Ko” as locals call it – is the heart of it all. Here you will find plenty of opportunities for luxury shopping complete with all the big names, but even if these wares are beyond your budget, it can still be a good time to window shop, grab a coffee, and enjoy the sights. With shops like Sevens, Saturn, and Swarovski, there are plenty of opportunities to lighten your wallet. However, the Kö can be fun even for the most frugal of visitors. For example, the Kaufhof Ko is one of Dusseldorf’s oldest department stores and is worth a look. Boasting an impressive selection of local food and wine on the first floor and clothing, jewelry, and gifts on the upper floors, the Kaufhof presents itself as an exception to the Ko’s extravagance.

Old Town

If the glitz and glamor of the Ko is not your speed, Old Town Dusseldorf may need to be higher on your “must see” list. Centrally located along the river, Old Town is home to some of Dusseldorf’s oldest and most interesting shops. Among many others you will find Uerige – a quaint souvenir and gift shop – the Dusseldorfer Senfladen – one of Dusseldorf’s most famous mustard shops – and Gewurzhaus – a “legendary” spice and specialty food shop.

The people of Dusseldorf, like most places in Germany, are very proud of their beers and pour scorn on the local brews from nearby Cologne. The local brew is also very distinctive, and quite different from the pils and lager style beers found in most of the rest of the country. The Dusseldorf Alt beer (old beer) is dark, flat, and with a slightly sweet and nutty flavor, not unlike the traditional ales found in Britain, such as Newcastle Brown. The Ueriger and Fuchschen (young fox) beers were very nice examples of Alt beer.
