Gulfport Things to Do
Gulfport is located along the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. Whether you’re looking to enjoy a beach vacation or spend your time out on the gambling floors of casinos, there’s plenty to do to keep you busy.
Historical and Architectural Sites
The Gulfport City Hall, with its beautiful neoclassical revival structure, was built in 1905 and survived both hurricanes Camille and Katrina. For those interested in architecture and history, this government building is worth a stop. Also, while in the area, visit the Gulfport Historical Museum and some of the other local architecture. There is also an old shrimp boat that was blown ashore by hurricane Camille in 1969 and sits close to where it washed up. Now called the Hurricane Camille Gift Shop, it is a tourist attraction and serves as a reminder of the massive storm.
Beaches and Other Outdoor Fun
Water on the Gulfport beaches tends to be very shallow and generally calm because of a chain of barrier islands which protect the shore from storms and controls the amount of wave action that hits the beach. The stretch of beach runs for about 26 miles along Hwy 90. Try your hand at the Jet Skis or rent a sailboat. If you’re looking to get the fishing experience, along the shore there are chartered boat outings. Want to do something a little different? Take a canoe trip on the Wolf River – there are various runs ranging from 5 to 24 miles and more. This river is calm and preserved for over 100 miles; you won’t see any construction on its banks. But you will see birds flying throughout and turtles basking in the sun on logs. There is camping allowed. If you didn’t bring camping gear, no worries, you can get outfitted.
Gambling and Nightlife
Prior to the early 1990s the main attraction of Gulfport was its white sandy beach but today many visitors come to Gulfport for its gambling casinos. If you’re looking to try your luck, there are a number of casinos that line the beach along US 90. If it’s a more traditional nightclub experience you’re looking for, try Club Illusion II. There is music, a large dance floor, several seating areas and a couple of nice pool tables. There’s also a concert venue here.
