Tips on Bodrum Warnings or Dangers – Stay Safe!

Bodrum Warnings and Dangers

One of the most popular places along the Turkish coast, Bodrum brings in a million visitors each year. Such crowds can lead to unexpected dangers such as dangerous roads and drinking water that may not always be pure.

This ancient port means lots beaches during the day and lots of dancing at night. However, you need to take special care in places like the airport and the roads as well as with the water.

The Airport

The airport to Bodrum is very small and often has long lines. Be prepared and bring a book. Keep in mind that eating and drinking options are limited here so you should also bring your own to avoid the high prices.

Minor Issues

There are public toilets but you need to have exact change so keep some coins in your purse. Many shops and attractions are completely closed for lunch between 12 and 1:30 p.m. so keep that in mind when visiting. Many people do not speak English so bring a Turkish phrase book so you can understand common signs.

Water and Drinks

Some people do not consider the local water potable. It has a high mineral content so may not feel right to you. Many flavors of bottled water are widely available so you might want to stick to that instead. When dining out, ask if the ice cubes used in your drink are made from local tap water or from bottled waters. Sometimes, there can be problems with the local pipes due to backwash from storms. In that case, check with your hotel and find out if there are any warnings that have been issued by the local authorities. The popular local alcohol drink is called Raki. Raki is very strong. Dilute it with ice when drinking if you don’t want to get drunk very quickly or you are planning to drive.

Getting Around

If you are walking, keep a close eye on the streets. Locals like their dogs but they don’t always remember to pick up after them. So look where you step. Also keep in mind that many locals do not leash their dogs. You might come across a dog while walking. Be wary and don’t reach out to pet them. Driving can be equally hazardous and may leave you caught in long periods of traffic. Keep a copy of your rental agreement and your driver’s license on hand at all times so if you are stopped, you can show it to the police. Parking is at a premium in many places so you might be better off taking an intracity dolmus bus instead. They are slow but cheap and reliable. If money is tight, look for street stalls selling items like a filled pastry called a borek and simit, which is like a thick Greek bagel.
