Como Shopping – Shops, Stores, Best Buys & Inside Tips

Como Shopping

Como is beautiful in and of itself, but another thing that draws visitors is it’s shopping! If you’re wondering what shops, stores, best buys and inside tips to look out for during your stay, here are some visitor reviews on Como shopping.

Silks

Como is best known for beautiful, locally-made silks which you can view in store windows. Scarves and other neck ware were shown in abundance, and would likely be the best buy in Como. She found other shops displaying jewelry and fashion accessories to be of interest.

Christmas Shops

Several weeks before Christmas, lots of street vendors will mount their counters selling their goods on the streets and squares of the town. You can find absolutely everything there, from jewelry, antiques to clothes, souvenirs, cosmetics, and toys. There are people from all over the world exhibiting their merchandise, so you can find a Chinese vendor with oriental souvenirs or toys next to the African wood carved furniture and ornaments, or a Polish clothes seller near Italian arts and crafts. Very interesting!

Educational Gifts

At Citta Del Sole you can find many educational toys for kids made in wood or any other material. You can also find nice objects as lamps, Zen garden, Chinese tea kits, and many other things. It’s a wonderul shop to browse in Como!

Outdoor Flea Market

What was once a charming outdoor marketplace has turned into a hodge-podge flea market with vendors packed into the space along the historic wall, and most of what you will see is from China. This happens three times a week, including Saturdays.

Venture inside the historic center and, if your timing is good, you will find local vendors with delicacies and art works in Piazza Mercante and perhaps in Piazza Cavour. Vendors from Trento displayed products from their region in little wooden concession stands with A-shaped roofs the first weekend in November.

Local Market

All day Saturday, or on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, you can wander around the main local market. Most of it trails in an L-shape around the edge of the old city walls, completely taking over the wide pavements. You can buy food, shoes, clothes, accessories (I’ve got bags for good prices), cosmetics and toiletries, household cooking and cleaning items and much more. Haggling may not be a routine practice here, but you might be able to get a reduction, especially from the African sellers who tend to be more chatty.  Do take care of your personal belongings, as pickpockets and opportunistic thieves may take advantage of any carelessness.
