Don’t have anyone to travel with, but not really up for wandering the world alone? You’ve now got a few new options.
Many solo travelers end up joining group tours in order to meet people and feel more secure. However, this can be awkward if you find yourself on a trip full of couples or best friends, leaving you feeling like the odd one out.
To combat this, Intrepid Travel recently launched a collection of half a dozen “For Solo Travelers” tours for 2018, with journeys to Morocco, Peru, India, Mexico, Bali, and Vietnam. The company already sees plenty of solo travelers on its regular itineraries—a whopping 50 percent of its clientele, according to a press release—but is adding the tours in response to a 40 percent growth in bookings by solo travelers.
While group tours for single travelers aren’t new, they’re typically offered by companies dedicated to solo travel such as Singles Travel Getaways and Singles Travel International. The addition of solo tours to the portfolio of a company like Intrepid, which offers trips for all types of travelers, speaks to the growing popularity of traveling alone.
In a recent survey of 2,000 American adults, Intrepid found that 36 percent of respondents travel alone in order to “challenge themselves and try new things,” while 30 percent do so “to meet new friends around the world.” Safety is a top concern; 73 percent of respondents said they worry about this issue when traveling alone.
Intrepid’s solo tours range from 8 to 15 days and start at $835 per person. The company will match you up with a roommate of the same sex unless you opt to pay a single supplement and stay in your own room.
