What’s the most expensive airport in America? Here’s a hint: It’s not exactly in the continental U.S. If you guessed Guam then high five!
According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, the average fare for domestic Guam flights in 2015 was $1,483. That’s hardly a stretch as Guam sits in the northwest Pacific Ocean near the Philippines and more than 7,000 miles from mainland U.S. Interestingly, despite the exorbitant costs and distance, Guam airport comes in at about the halfway mark of the most trafficked U.S. airport.
Finding yourself tweeting #IHateTheWait at long TSA lines? Steer clear of LAX, as the traffic extends past the freeway. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics rates the Southern California gateway as the busiest for domestic travel.
You’re sure to breeze through the TSA queue at the dual-runway Unalakleet Airport, though, as it and two other Alaskan cities (Aniak and St. Mary’s) rank as the nation’s least-trafficked airports.
And for access to the cheapest fares, move to Hagerstown, Maryland, where domestic fares hover at an average $82.60.
