New flight routes mean more competition and bigger savings for travelers. Here are seven new routes from JetBlue, Southwest, Spirit, WOW Air, and others that’ll drive bargains this year.
7 New Routes That Promise Cheap Flights

Airline Route JetBlue
Sunny and festive year-round, Atlanta will soon be an even more affordable flight destination. This year, low-cost carriers will be increasing frequency and capacity to the "New York City of the South."
Boston residents have cheaper options to Atlanta when JetBlue launches its Boston – Atlanta route on March 30. Upon announcing the East Coast route back in mid-2016, JetBlue briefly discounted fares to the shockingly low tune of $47 each way. Nonstop everyday fares for spring 2017 were still affordable at $58 one-way at press time.
JetBlue intends to expand its presence at Atlanta's Hartfield International—the nation's busiest airport—from New York City (JFK), Ft. Lauderdale, and Orlando later this year, though inaugural dates haven’t yet been announced.

Airline Route Wow Air
Southern Floridians should soon expect cheap Pond-hopping fares as the new norm because Wow Air is bringing its $99 fares to Miami. WOW Air is scheduled to launch its Airbus A330-300 Reykjavik-bound flight out of Miami on April 5.
The extremely affordable fares are a breakthrough in the Sunshine State but already a staple for budget-conscious travelers along the East Coast and in California.
Airline Route JetBlue
No longer playing second-fiddle to their more prominent neighboring airports, Long Beach and Ft. Lauderdale are both now affordable and convenient options for Los Angeles- and Southern Florida-area travelers. JetBlue plans to launch a cross-country route between the two destinations this May 3.
Inugural fares on the the Ft. Lauderdale – Long Beach route sold at $75 one-way. At press time, spring midweek flights were $124—very cheap for a six-hour transcontinental airfare.
JetBlue is the largest carrier in Long Beach, linking its Southern Cal hub to 13 destinations across the U.S.
Airline Route Cuba
Add Alaska Airlines to the short list of airlines flying to Cuba. With its Los Angeles – Havana route, however, Alaska is the sole carrier linking Cuba with the West Coast. (The majority of routes fly out of Southern Florida.)
Brand-new nonstop Los Angeles – Havana routes launched earlier this month—and they fly daily. Currently, non-sale fares for LAX – HAV during springtime are $163 one-way.
Keep your eyes on Cuba travel, as the Caribbean island dominates "Best Places to Go" lists, including our very own 10 Most Intriguing Places to Visit in 2017.
Airline Route Southwest
Include Belize City in Southwest’s lengthy list of new routes for 2017. With new daily nonstop travel out of Ft. Lauderdale, you can find summer flights to the Latin American capital at $79 one-way.
June 4 is a big day for the popular low-cost carrier as it simultaneously expands to 20 new nonstop routes, both in the States and abroad. The new routes bring Southwest’s tally to 12 Latin American and Caribbean destinations, including Cancun, Los Cabos, and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico; Liberia and San Jose, Costa Rica; Havana, Santa Clara, and Varadero, Cuba; and Montego Bay, Jamaica.
Airline Routes Spirit
Finding cheap flights to the Big Easy will be, well, easy as of May 25—especially from Baltimore, Cleveland, and Orlando, when Spirit brings its notoriously affordable Bare Fares to New Orleans.
For reference, I found $54 one-way fares on the New Orleans – Orlando route and $69 fares for Baltimore – New Orleans nonstop flights, both for June travel.
Airline Routes British Airways
The new British Airways route is set to give Bay Area residents even greater options for transatlantic travel. Nonstop Oakland-to-London (Gatwick) flights will launch in late March, operating four times per week.
Fares during the introductory window sold at $231, reports the East Bay Times. I’m spotting them at $709 at press time for travel during the first week in May.
