Things To Do in Shreveport
When you think of visiting Louisiana, the first city that comes to your mind is probably New Orleans. It isn’t the only great city in the state, though. There are a ton of great things to do in the city of Shreveport as well.
Gator and Friends
You can’t visit Louisiana without seeing some alligators. This private zoo has a swathe of them for tourists to come take a look at. It has other animals too, with some of the most exotic species you have ever seen in a petting zoo. You can’t pet the gators, though that’s probably not a good idea anyways.
Barksdale AFB Eighth Air Force Museum
Military buffs will definitely want to check out the Air Force Museum in Shreveport. On display are 28 aircraft along with even more pictures and information about them located throughout the museum. One of the coolest displays in the entire place is the “History of Aerial Bombardment.” The museum is open seven days a week (except for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day) until 4 p.m., giving everyone plenty of chances to come check it out.
The Louisiana Boardwalk
The Mississippi isn’t the only river to run through the state: the Red River does too, and it cuts right through Shreveport. One of the best riverside attractions in the city is the Louisiana Boardwalk. It includes a myriad of great shops and restaurants. If you like to gamble, there are some casinos on the boardwalk. It’s also home to the best view in the area as the bridges cross in front of the cities skyline.
R.W. Norton Art Gallery
Fans of visual art should be sure to make a stop at the R.W. Norton Art Gallery. A visit to this place is a two-for-one experience. Not only does it have the best art exhibits in the area, it’s also surrounded by the most beautiful grounds in the city. The gallery is a great place to go to get some culture into your family’s lives while you are in the city. There is never an admission fee for the grounds or the museum, even the special exhibits.
Mudbug Madness
Mudbug is just another word for crawfish, one of the most popular shellfish delicacies in the great state of Louisiana. Mudbug Madness is a festival held each Memorial Day weekend in Shreveport. The gathering celebrates Cajun music, Cajun culture, and crawfish, of course. It is generally the most-attended event of the year in the city and it’s held right downtown on the festival plaza.
Sci-Port Children’s Science Museum
A great resource for the inquisitive child, Sci-Port is a two-story building dedicating to educating children of all ages about science. The exhibits are always changing to keep things fresh and there is also an IMAX theater. It is open to any child ages two and older.
