Things to Do in Marmaris
Known for its nightlife and busy, pebbly beach with long seafront promenade, Marmaris is a beautiful seaside resort in Southwest Turkey. Visitors can choose from a myriad of things to do in Marmaris, both on land and sea. There are also many wonderful tours and day trips available from this Mediterranean resort town on the Turquoise Coast.
Beach and Water Activities
Visitors will find most of the action during the day along the beachfront in Marmaris. The beach is a bit narrow and is lined with many beach chairs and umbrellas. Each section of the beach is clean, comfortable, and well maintained by the hotels. Visitors can also enjoy people-watching and shopping along the long palm tree-lined promenade that sits adjacent to the pebbly beach.
Real beach fans should also visit nearby Icemeler Beach. It is about seven miles down the coastline and can be reached by walking, but can be more easily reached by bus or water taxi. It is ideal for watersports and is a bit less crowded than the beach in Marmaris. The town of Icemeler is also worth exploring.
Sightseeing and Tours
Make sure to visit the Marina in Marmaris to admire some impressive yachts and enjoy the many waterfront restaurants in the area. Boat rides are abundant. Big or small, hundreds of boats depart from Marmaris every day. Riders can visit Turtle beach, King Tombs, Aquarium Bay, Mud Baths, and even Rhodes, Greece for a day. Trips down the Dalyan river are highly recommended; sailing and dive trips are also popular.
Touring by land is also an adventure in Marmaris. Visitors can ride horses in the mountains and enjoy a wonderful ride at all paces while taking in the scenic views. A jeep safari is another option. The jeep convoy passes through refreshingly tall, green forests or across peninsulas where nature is only an arm’s length away. You can immerse yourself in the stunning views from mountain lookouts and wonder in amazement at the azure sea and rugged coastline.
Sights, Spas, and Shopping
Tourists can also discover history in Marmasis. Marmaris Castle sits high up in the old town and was built in 1522 by Suleiman the Magnificent. You can also see the remains of Amos and take some time to visit Knidos, which is considered one of the most impressive antique sites in Turkey.
For shopping, tourists should spend some time at the Grand Bazar in Marmaris, which is a wonderful conglomeration of stalls, outlets, shops, restaurants, and bars. It is connected by walkways, alleys, and squares. It is a great way to escape the heat, and if you want a belly dancing outfit, you can find it here.
Finally, spa enthusiasts should not miss the Turkish Hamam Baths–where the spa experience will leave you feeling reborn.
Nightlife
Marmaris offers a few Turkish night show locations. If you have never been to Turkey, definitely go to one of these night shows. You can expect belly dancers, Turkish folkdance, Turkish food and wine, and a lot of laughs and audience participation.
