Lumut Things to Do
In Lumut, Malaysia, there are plenty of activities to check out. From night markets to beaches and military history to cruises, there’s something for everyone.
Royal Malaysian Navy Base
Military history and new vessels from around the world are on display at the Royal Malaysian Navy Base. History buffs and ship enthusiasts will enjoy the tours of both current and retired ships.
Teluk Batik Beach
This is a popular beach destination for locals. It’s also a great place to not only get some local flavor, but to check out small food vendors along the edge of the beach (some will even walk along the beach, offering small goods). If you want to avoid the crowds, stop by during the week and not the weekend. Crowds are the heaviest on Saturday and Sunday.
Night Market (Pasar Malam)
At the night market, there are usually a few shops hawking goods, but for the most part it is all focused on food. Whether you want to go for people watching or to try out different kinds of food, you will have a blast. There are a few different night markets in town, so ask your hotel which one is closest to you. They may also have some recommendations based on the kind of food or activities you are looking for, as each is slightly different.
Take a Cruise
A number of ferries and charters leave from the port. These cruises can last from a few hours to a full day. Some of the tours will have a tour guide speaking over the PA system, explaining what you pass. Others just allow you to take it in on your own. With so many different tours available, there is something perfect for you and the people you are with. Just make sure to show up at the tour early, as most are first-come first-served. This way, you can pick out your perfect seat.
Waterfront
Lumut isn’t as developed and built up as some of the other cities along the coast in Southeast Asia, but this is starting to change. Right now, there is a nice combination of traditional and cozy buildings along the waterfront. The entire waterfront will likely look completely different in another 10 years as more developers move in and build up the shoreline.
