Tips on Siem Reap Warnings or Dangers
For the most part, Siem Reap is a safe city. It isn’t as large as many of the other destinations in Cambodia, but you should still keep an eye out for everything from massage parlors to money scams.
Siem Reap Warnings and Dangers
Most issues you’ll experience in Siem Reap revolve around money scams. Here are a few tips on how to avoid that and other dangers.
Massage Parlors
Receiving a classic thai massage is an experience most consider worthwhile when visiting Cambodia. However, it can be easy to accidentally stumble into an adult massage parlor that’s more than you bargained for. In Siem Reap, most of the locations are clean and nice spas, and you can identify the adult massage parlors by how aggressive the workers are in offering the service. It’s best to not reply and instead keep walking.
Money Exchange
Avoid carrying around foreign money for exchange. In-person conversion rates are not generally favorable and often times you’ll be charged for the service. If you do use a money exchange, stick to locations inside or next to banks or the airport. Even if other locations offer better rates, you run the risk of being scammed out of money or getting hid with hidden fees. It’s always better to carry around a debit card and simply use an ATM at a bank to withdraw money. You’re unlikely to incur service fees aside from the usual ATM fees.
Avoid Drugs At All Costs
In Cambodia and much of Southeast Asia it’s important to avoid any illegal drugs. If you are arrested for drug use or possession you can potentially face the death penalty. Due to the production of opium and chemically created drugs in Asia, these rules have long existed in an effort to prevent large drug rings from operating here. If you see any drug use or are offered any substances, leave immediately to avoid risking any involvement.
Begging
If this is your first trip to Southeast Asia you’ll probably be surprised at the level of begging in the streets. Some beggars can be aggressive, so it’s best to simply avoid them. Avoid engaging in conversation and most will leave you alone.
