Varadero Things to Do – Attractions & Must See

The beach resort town of Varadero, Cuba, is welcoming and warm. Activities here center around being outdoors as much as possible and enjoying both the calm waters and mild climate.

Varadero Things to Do

Veradero makes the perfect getaway if you like lots of sand and fun in the sun, not to mention a dash of local Cuban culture and colorful wildlife.

Exploring the Town

While the town of Varadero is small, it does have its simple pleasures. You’ll find a public park called Parque Josone that is adjacent to the ocean, a great thing to do when the heat has gone and you want to take a cool stroll.

If you want to opt for a slightly faster way of getting around, try a horse and buggy ride. Buggies go along the main plaza. You can also rent a scooter that will help you see the town up close. A double decker bus goes over the main avenue all day long. You can hop on and off as you please, making this the most economical and convenient way to see the area. Bicycle taxis are also available for a small fee. Get one if you don’t see a bus nearby.

Ecological Reserve

One of the great things to do here is see the local area wildlife. At the edge of the beach in the area by the Paradisus Varadero you can find an ecological reserve. The reserve is designed to help provide a protected space for sea life. While quite lovely in the sun, it’s after a storm that the area comes alive. Storms often bring up many fossils, shells and other interesting debris. This is also when you can find tidal pools. Many local area hotels offer guides who will point out what you might otherwise have missed when exploring on your own. You can also come outside after a storm to look at the beach. This is when you’ll often find lots of amazing shells to bring home.

Other Highlights

The natives who once inhabited this area left behind evidence of their customs. Retreat from the heat of the day in Ambrosio’s Caves, one of 15 interconnected caves that show off the artifacts they left behind. You’ll see lots of artwork depicting local wildlife. Another way to retreat from the heat is at the local mall. You can visit lots of local shops, take in a meal and even take in a boat ride through the local swamps. Many travelers also find this an ideal way to take in a day trip in the nearby capital of Havana. A tour of Havana can offer a break from the beach and a chance to explore the local culture even further.
