The country of Georgia’s second largest city, Batumi is a major resort destination. A bustling seaside resort, it tends to have more tourists and things to do during the warmer summer months.
Batumi Things to Do
Parks, beaches and a charming Old Town make Batumi an ideal destination. Many travelers find this to be a restful stop as it is the first major city after the Turkish boarder. Whether you’re staying for a few hours or a few days, you’ll find a lot to enjoy here.
Some Must See Tourist Spots
Travelers will want to put a few places at the top of their travel list. The Gonio-Apsaros is a Byzantine castle just south of the town. Here you’ll find crenelated towers and the remnants of an ancient Roman stone waterworks. The local Old Town offers a charming walk in a city full of ancient history. Visit the Batumi Art Museum for exhibits from local artists. The Mtirala National Park is a pristine national park offering many trails in a lush green forest area.
For the Kids
If you have kids with you, you’ll find several attractions they will enjoy, like the Aquapark. There are pools for both kids and adults to enjoy here as well as a cafe for parents to relax while their kids go swimming. Another popular choice is the Dolphinarium where you can see dolphins up close.
There’s also a leisure center called the Tsitsnatela where you will find lots of attractions,. There’s a children’s tower for the kids to explore, a large ferris wheel for the entire family to enjoy and other attractions that kids will love. Kids and adults can also enjoy the annual Festival of Folklore. The festival showcases the local culture. Parents and children here in August can also enjoy the Festival of Neptune on the beach with lots of games and contests for all family members.
Beaches
Another major attraction is the beaches. Batumi is surrounded by the Black Sea on one side and the green mountains on the other, and its beaches stretch for several miles. Be aware that the beaches here are pebbly and not coated with white sand. Bring beach shoes to walk along the shore and a thick blanket so you can sit down. The gentle waters are ideal for younger children who will enjoy wading in the water. There is a promenade behind the beach that makes an ideal place to go strolling during the day. You can find places serving Turkish coffee and snacks like kabobs. Try the local thick bread filled with cheese, eggs and butter: It makes a hearty and filling meal or snack during the day. At night, this part of town comes alive with people enjoying the mild evening air.
