The capital of the Spanish island of Mallorca, Palma de Mallorca is a mix of Arabic and European styles, with historic landmarks dating back to Roman times. Not only does the city itself hold much to do and see, but it is surrounded by quaint villages and natural beauty that is well worth a visit.

In the City

Palma de Mallorca is full of idyllic streets with unique architecture and picturesque shops, so taking the time to simply walk and enjoy is absolutely necessary. Find your own way or take some well-known streets such as the Paseo Maritime, which runs from the Cathedral to the Port area. This is basically the Prom and stretches for a couple of miles and passes the marina heading west.

For a great overview of the city from above, visit Bellver Castle, a 700-year fortress that dominates the skyline of Palma. The great distinction to this castle is its circular ground plan, unique in Spain. It’s definitely a must-see in Palma de Mallorca.

While wandering, keep your eyes open for little surprise views, a glimpse down a beautiful alleyway or elegant courtyards dating back to the thirteenth century. You never know what will catch your eye.

Of all the sightseeing, a few landmarks stand out as places not to be missed, such as the Catedral de Mallorca. Once the Grand Mosque of Mayurka, immediately after the Christian conquest of the island in 1229 it was converted into a cathedral until 1300 when the mosque was destroyed and construction of the Cathedral of Palma de Mallorca began. Construction lasted 300 years, and it is now one of Europe’s largest cathedrals, referred to locally as just Le Seu.

There is also the Museu de Mallorca, which is a 16th century palace now dedicated to the island and its history; and the beautiful Arab baths, which are the last remaining Moorish building in Palma and surrounded by beautiful gardens.

Around the City

Venturing out of Palma de Mallorca in any direction will result in a wonderful time sightseeing. You can choose to take an adventurous zigzagging road to the sea such as Sa Calobra; or take a train from Palma de Mallorca to visit Soller, a quaint Spanish village with a pretty church.

The coastline near the city is captivating and many visitors find their own treasured places by renting a car or going on a hike to see what they discover. If your travels take you a little further, you might get to Paguera, a lovely and well-known beach resort on the South West part of Mallorca; or the town of Valdemossa.
