Sex often sells, which is why many popular European destinations includes red light districts. Antwerp is no different, and has a small red light district. Here’s what to expect.

For starters, the red light district here is smaller than in other cities in Europe (it is downright tiny compared to Amsterdam’s Red Light District). As you would in any other similar district, you need to exercise caution. Sex-based theaters and entertainment bring out the seedier side of a city. While crime levels are not especially high here, make sure you keep your wits about you as you walk around.

Legal Prostitution

It is legal in the area, but the prostitution “district” is quite small. In fact, it is only allowed on three streets in Verversrui, Shippersstraat, and Vingerlingstraat. Some people might attempt to approach you and offer themselves up on other streets, but generally solicitation is only focused on these three streets. Note that prostitutes in Antwerp are not required to receive regular STD checks (although the most reputable ones do).

Entertaining Graffiti Art

While the district is small, the wall art is entertaining. It mixes psychedelic cartoons from the 70s with pornographic images. Unless you are extremely open with your children, this really isn’t a spot for kids.

Planet Sexy

Planet Sexy is home to host of different porn adult cinemas located. There is a sex shop inside, as well as peep shows. It is possible to engage in sexual activities here and have people pay for the “peep” show. Customers can rent a room for themselves with someone else, or enlist professional services.

Note: Cameras

Taking pictures here is not as off limits as it is in the Amsterdam Red Light District. However, once inside a facility, put your camera away. Most people don’t want their pictures taken (and you probably don’t want someone else snapping your picture either).
