Pokhara Transporation – Taxi, Train, Bus & Airport Tips

Pokhara Transportation

Pokhara is among the largest cities of Nepal and sits in the northwestern corner of the Pokhara Valley. As a major metropolitan center, there are many forms of transportation available, ranging from airplanes to trains and motorcycles.

Scooters and Motorcycles

Scooters can be hired for a few hundred rupees per day. The best place to find them is at the crossroads in Lakeside. The stretch of land leading away from the lake has a cluster of shops with bikes outside, and visitors can inquire within for prices. You should be warned that driving around the old town of Pokhara takes a bit of getting used to, and getting lost is easy if you don’t have an accurate map.

Still, hiring a motorbike or scooter is a great way to see the distant parts of Pokhara, from Devi Falls in the south west, to the Gurkha Museum, and Mahendra Bat Caves in the north. The most common bike that visitors use is a Pulsar 180, which, if in good condition, can handle the road conditions well. Drivers are warned to stay on the roads and avoid the trails designated for hikers.

Airlines

Pokhara Airport is a regional airport serving the city. The airport was established in 1958 and is operated by the government. It offers regular connections to Kathmandu and Jomsom, as well as seasonal connections to Manang. Taking the bus to Kathmandu is less costly, but it´s also a long journey, which makes flight a more desirable option if you have a limited amount of time in Nepal.

The airport is located very centrally in Pokhara, and you can walk to the airport if you don´t feel like paying for a cab or a minibus. In 2011, Buddha Air, a Nepali private airline, began international flights from Pokhara to Lucknow, India. New flights now connect travelers to New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.
