Majorca Island Warnings and Dangers
Majorca Island is a popular destination for British and German tourists. The island is the largest of the Balearic Islands that belong to Spain in the Mediterranean. It is all set up for tourists, so it is very easy to travel around, but like any tourist destination, there are dangers. Here are some tips on Majorca Island warnings or dangers.
General Safety
For the most part the island is very safe. It is a tourist haven, and local officials want to keep tourists happy, so they keep it safe. Dangers are more likely to be pickpockets or crimes of opportunity. At night, being alone is never wise no matter where you are, but criminals do seek out tourist areas, so just some general carefulness should suffice. Be wary about walking on the beach alone at night.
Too Many Tourists
The small town of Magaluf has become overrun by tourists, especially those who like to drink and party all night. They can get obnoxious, and maybe dangerous at times. If you like partying all night with excessive drinking and debauchery, this is your place. If not, there are other very nice places to see on the island. Also in the partying vein, there are a lot of prostitutes in the S’Arenal area, and they can be aggressive towards men by themselves. It is also a good idea to plan your travels carefully, with the crowds in mind. The roads are less crowded, and many sites are less crowded, in the early morning hours.
Small Con Games
Con artists like beaches and tourist areas, because people are off guard, so keep your guard up. Many vendors on the beach can be aggressive and they have a few tricks up their sleeve. One is to offer you a drink, and open the can, then they say you have to pay because it is open. They will create a fuss and maybe even call the police if you don’t pay. Sellers of various wares can also be very aggressive and tricky. Also watch out for the shell game. It is rigged and is designed to take your money. At the Royal Palace, women will put a rose on you, and in the confusion they will pick your pocket. These are just a few examples of scams in Majorca.
Natural Pests
Watch out for mosquitos, they can be very annoying in summer with all the small lakes on the island. They’re mostly just a hassle, rarely causing disease, but some spray will help. The sun is also very hot, so you need some sun screen as well. The summer heat can also cause heat stroke. These seem obvious, but it’s good to be aware.
