Bali Warnings and Dangers
Beware the Airport Money Changers
You will find money changers at the airport when you first arrive in Bali, but the exchange rate you receive there will be bad. Instead, it is better to wait until you get to your destination. Even there, however, you need to be careful.
Some money changers are not completely honest. They will attempt to distract you and steal money from you. They do this by trying to engage in unnecessary conversation. Some will even try to take money out of your wallet and say it was already on the table and it isn’t yours. Just keep your eyes open and your mind on the task at hand. In addition, don’t let them see your wallet when you walk in and don’t let them see where you put your money when you leave.
Be Careful When Handling Animals
Many of the animals on Bali have some type of disease. In the worst cases, they can carry rabies. While the island is working to get a handle on the situation, there are still some issues. All animals that have been treated for rabies have a very noticeable red collar. If an animal doesn’t have this collar then it has not been treated and you should stay clear. This is true whether the animal is a dog, cat, or monkey.
Keep Your Valuables Under Lock and Key in Your Bali Hotel Room
Unfortunately, no matter where you stay or how nice your hotel is, you do need to be aware of hotel theft. If you have any valuables with you such as jewelry, a camera, a tablet or anything else, and you plan on leaving it in your hotel room, you need to lock it in your suitcase. Otherwise, you may find it is gone when you get back. You can purchase a travel lock that will help keep your valuables safe.
Watch Out for Local Vendors on the Beach
While it may be tempting to let a local braid your hair or sell you something while you are relaxing on the beach, you need to be cautious. The vendors will quote you a very high price, so you will want to be sure and negotiate the price with them. Also, once you say yes to one vendor you should be prepared to be swarmed with all the others as they will want to take advantage of your good nature.
