Savannah – What to Pack – Clothing and Supplies Tips

Savannah What to Pack

Savannah summers are hot and humid and the winters are generally milder than many other places in the U.S. Be sure you know what to pack when visiting Savannah.

Luggage

No matter what you have planned for your Savannah adventure, these luggage options are ideal for a short or long-term stay.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear

Most importantly, aim to be comfortable, not stylish, on your trip. It is generally very humid from February through October.

Summer: It is hot as a fire cracker in the summer! Be sure to pack shorts and lightweight shirts; cotton clothing is best. For more than casual dress, light dresses for women and khakis and short-sleeve button-up shirts for men are OK.

Winter: You’ll probably need a coat (or at least a warm jacket), be sure to pack clothes that layer well. It can get really cold, but the weather is very unpredictable.

Autumn: Jeans and a light jacket or sweater will do. You’ll probably want to bring a few short-sleeved shirts also. Again, think layering.

Spring: Weather is similar to summertime, so shorts and tank tops/short-sleeve shirts are ideal.

In the warmer months pack a sweater/light jacket because restaurants often have the air conditioning cranked up and it’s freezing. If your hair tends to frizz in humidity, bring a hat or scarf.

Important: Make sure you have comfortable shoes. If you stick to the Historic District and Riverfront, the brick roads and cobblestones will wear out your shins!

Toiletries and Medical Supplies

Being Savannah is so hot and sticky, there are a few essentials to remember to bring:

Tuck a pair of sunglasses into your bag to protect your eyes.

Photo Equipment

Because Savannah is such a lovely city, it is imperative to have your camera “at the ready!”‘

You’ll be taking lots of photos, so plan for plenty of film or SD cards. Also batteries. You can buy this stuff locally, but you’ll pay a lot more in the tourist areas. Many of the buildings are hard to get a good photo of, so bring the appropriate lens for your camera.

Electronics to Pack

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear

If you’re headed to Tybee Island, the beach is terrific, so enjoy, but don’t plan on doing any surfing there—it’s restricted on most of the beach and the surf is pretty weak, anyhow. But do bring a bathing suit, beach towel, beach chair, cooler, etc.

Miscellaneous

Definitely carry a water bottle and keep yourself hydrated, especially in the middle of the day, but be aware that opportunities to use a bathroom in the Historic District are not abundant.

Savannah somehow inspires writing with its slow-paced demeanor, so you might want to consider packing some pens and writing paper. This way you can write to friends and family back home while sitting on a square bench or by the riverfront or something Savannah-esque like that. For your reading pleasure, “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”, by John Berendt is very popular in town. The 1994 best seller is set in Savannah and is a good read. If you don’t want to pack it, not a problem. It will be in the store window of every bookstore in town.
