Ericeira Things to Do
Ericeira is a beautiful seaside resort area about 35 kilometers northwest of Lisbon, Portugal’s capital. The town offers a wealth of things for travelers to do, both day and night.
Enjoy the Beach
The beach is the primary reason that most travelers come to Ericeira. Although the water is quite cold, the weather is typically warm and sunny, making swimming in the ocean the perfect way to cool off. Particularly in the summertime, the local beaches can get very crowded, so be sure to arrive early to reserve a spot on the sand. In the evenings, the whole town turns out to watch the sunset over the ocean, so don’t miss out on this breathtaking evening ritual.
Visit Local Churches and Chapels
The Ericeira area is home to a number of churches and chapels, many of them dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries. As you stroll through town, take the time to stop and visit some of these spectacular buildings, even if you don’t consider yourself a religious person. The architecture and artwork alone are worth a look. Don’t miss the Saint Sebastian chapel. Its walls and ceiling are all lined with a beautiful mosaic of tiles. The Saint Pedro church is another one that you have to see to truly appreciate.
Wander the Local Streets
All throughout Ericeira, there are sights to see simply by walking down the street. The local buildings have been remarkably well-preserved, taking you on a trip back through time to a more peaceful era. Many fountains dot the path throughout town, so take some time to relax, listening to the sound of the trickling water. It’ll help you forget all your worries and cares. Don’t miss the city’s public library, quite possibly the most beautiful building in the area. It houses over 17,000 tomes, so you’ll have plenty of reading material for when you are relaxing on the beach!
Ericeira’s true charm comes from its stunningly preserved architecture and beautiful seaside setting. This is not the place to rush through, so take your time to wander around and see the sights at a leisurely pace. After a few days, you won’t want to go back to the hustle and bustle of your everyday life!
