Jamaica Warnings and Dangers
Jamaican is famous for its beaches and vacation resorts, but this island also has a rich history of repression, political strife, and poverty. Outside of the confines of the safe resort and guarded beaches is an island community that relies on tourism to make ends meet. Jamaica also has a storied history of art, music, and culture worth exploring. Be aware of these few dangers before doing so.
Never Look a Salesman in The Eye
Though this may sound like ridiculous advice, but cruise directors tell people to not look merchants in the eyes as they can become aggressive in selling to you. One man recalls. “ I didn’t believe it. Besides, I’m Southern. We make eye contact and talk to everyone! Well, it happened exactly as he said it would.”
Likewise, some people recommend that you don’t do anything to draw attention to to yourself, such as over-the-top or colorful clothing. People will use any excuse to start conversation in an attempt to get money.
Stay at a Resort Instead of Town
It’s often recommended that tourists stay at the resorts, which are much safer. One traveler’s experience, “Every time I went out to experience the culture, we were confronted by people who wanted to get some money from us, either by begging, selling drugs, or trying to rip us off in some way or another. This truly got in the way of experiencing any culture. Moreover, I would be afraid to go with a 2 year old child. The beaches are not clean, and the streets are somewhat dangerous.” The resorts are cleaner and often have security.
A Warning to Backpackers
Locals and young travelers recommend you never backpack around the Island of Jamaica. The general crime rate here is extremely high, and violent crime isn’t uncommon. Tourism remains behind gates and on maintained beaches.
