The biggest draw to Lynchburg is its long-running distillery, Jack Daniels. A number of the sights around town highlight the famous whiskey distillery and many visitors come to take the tour.

Visiting the Jack Daniel’s Distillery

Founded in 1866, Jack Daniel’s Distillery is the oldest registered distillery in the U.S. and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Start in the Visitor’s Center to see all the historic displays. Tours run frequently all day and are led by an employee, not a tour guide. Highlights include:

• The rickyard where charcoal is made for the mellowing process
• Limestone cave spring where the fresh water comes from to make the whiskey
• Mr. Jack’s office where his desk and safe are kept (the story goes he kicked this safe in anger and got a toe infection that turned fatal)
• The distillery production areas and processing plant (no photos allowed in these)

Be sure to wear comfortable shoes, there are a lot of stairs and other walking areas. For those that don’t want to walk, there are alternate tours available.

You might find it intriguing that one of the most popular whiskeys is made in a dry county. Since Prohibition, they cannot sell whiskey at the distillery, although they did get permission to sell commemorative bottles that visitors can purchase.

Lynchburg Downtown Square

The town square is a good place to stop by when in Lynchburg. Its focal point is the 100-year-old courthouse, which is worth seeing. Bordering the courthouse are restaurants and shops. Most of the shops have the same type of stock (Jack Daniels t-shirts, charcoal briquettes, other JD merchandise) and the prices vary, although not by much. It is a pleasant way to spend the afternoon after your distillery tour. If you want to see Jack Daniel’s final resting place, his grave is not too far from the town square.

The Moore County Jail

A visit to Lynchburg would not be complete without touring the Moore County Jail. The tour is free, although the Historical Society accepts donations to help maintain the aged building. Once inside, you’ll see the various memorabilia from years gone by and you might even get the chance to hear some of the stories and legends to go with them.
