On the interstate between Orlando and Daytona Beach is a nondescript exit named “Cassadaga” that might not catch your eye, but is a surprising mecca to millions around the world.  That’s because Cassadaga is the self-proclaimed “Psychic Capital of the World.”

Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp

This unincorporated area of 57 acres is home to 55 residents, many who are licensed psychics and certified spiritualists.  The official name of the camp, which was established in 1894, is the Southern Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp Meeting Association.™ Streets have names like Mediumship Way and Spiritualist Street. With the renewed interest in”New Age” spiritualism in the 1970s, more people drawn to this tiny community in Central Florida.

Stevens Street

The two groups–traditionalists and New Age practicioners–have established their own physical as well as spiritual territories within the community.  The traditionalists are in keeping with founder George Colby’s vision for the camp.  Their gatherings center in the Colby Temple, where each day folks gather for services, classes, or lectures.  The New Age group uses tarot, rune stones, chanting, and a belief in a holistic form of spirituality. Their center is the Cassadaga Hotel.

Take a walk  

Cassadaga isn’t very large, but it is well laid out and full of interesting sights.  The homes are a mix of Key West Conch style with large porches, some Victorian style with gingerbread detailing, and cinder-block cottages built to withstand the seasonal hurricane winds. Not every house is historic and picturesque–some are  in disrepair–but there are tiny gardens, secret benches, and old trees dripping with Spanish moss to add to the mystique that surrounds the community. There is a small lake within Colby State Park and a playground for children. Next to one of the book shops is a small garden with a fountain, statuary, and benches for contemplation or meditation.

Haunted Hotel 

Recently restored to the reflect the 1920s style of some of the grand hotels in Florida, the Cassadaga Hotel comes with fifty updated rooms, a spacious wraparound porch complete with rocking chairs, a full service restaurant, a breakfast cafe, and ghosts.  Guests are encouraged to bring cameras to capture the friendly visitors from beyond as the orbs appear at various times of day and night. The hotel provides its own crew of psychics trained in new-age-style readings. As you are dining in the Sinatra Ristorante, card readers come by to do a mini-reading while you are sipping a glass of wine in between the dueling pianos.  There is also a gift shop full of cards, crystals, and books to help on your new age journey.

If you go, go with an open mind. This is a community of like-minded people who welcome anyone, believer or skeptic, with a warm heart and kind words.
