There are several options for getting around the municipality of San Sebastian or Donostia (Basque). The most common methods are walking or biking. Here’s everything you need to know about San Sebastian transportation.

Walking in San Sebastian

The easiest way to get around in San Sebastian is by walking. The sidewalks are wide with good lighting for easy navigation. All have accessibility ramps for walkers or wheelchairs.  The old part of the city, called Parte Vieja, doesn’t allow motorized vehicles; walking is encouraged. Walking from the northeast section to raw southwest section takes about 40 minutes. Packing a pair of comfortable walking shoes is a good idea.

Biking in San Sebastian

Biking in San Sebastian is also easy. There are clearly marked bike lanes on every street. Tourists can purchase a bike-card from the tourist kiosk. Cards come in one-, three-, or seven-day increments. Parking and pick up/drop off points are located throughout the town.  There are private rental companies if you are looking for a specialty bike.

Cars, Buses, and Taxis in San Sebastian

Buses run frequently in San Sebastian, and the stops are clearly marked. The buses are wheelchair-accessible.

Taxis can be found at specific stands as there is a no-hail rule in place. Rental cars are available, but parking is expensive and located in underground lots.

Trains and buses run between the airports in Bilbao and Biarritz. There is also ferry service to Santa Clara Island.
