Shkoder in Albania is a cultural wonderland, with history waiting at every turn. Getting around by taxi, bus, or car are all options if you’re looking for transportation tips in Shkoder.

Getting to Shkoder

Most people agree that you should fly to Montenegro, and then take the bus to Shkoder. The southern town of Ulcinj in Montenegro has a direct connection, and runs at 6:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. if you’re going from Ulcinj to Shkoder, and 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. if you’re going the opposite direction. You can also find buses that take you to Ulcinj if you’re traveling from Bar or Budva in Montenegro. These mini-buses are both inexpensive and convenient, but their schedules and destinations may change from year to year. They’re always aiming to add new routes between the major cities. If you’re traveling within Europe, you can take a train from Budapest to Podgorica in Montenegro or from Belgrade, and then take the buses from there. There are no train stations in Shkoder.

Cabs and Walking Within Shkoder

Once you get to this town, you’ll likely either want to take a cab or just use your feet. If you’re planning to get a taxi, you’ll have the most luck at Sheshi Demokracia Square where they line up for your convenience. They’re more than willing to take to popular places like Rozafa castle. Just pay attention to the distance, because your taxi may or may not have a meter. Drivers may be more likely to take advantage of the tourists, so brush up on your negotiation skills before you head here. Or see much of the city for free if you like to walk. Many of the main sights are located within a concentrated area, and are generally marked with signs for easy navigating.

Renting a Car

Most people will recommend having someone else drive your around, not just for convenience but for safety’s sake as well. Some roads aren’t very well-maintained (especially if you venture into the rural areas), with large protrusions or potholes that are difficult to steer around. The people who know this area are much more used to it, so just be very careful if you do choose to drive.
