Windsor Warnings and Dangers
Windsor is a city in the Canadian Province of Ontario. Located across the river from Detroit, Michigan, it’s a common tourist destination for Americans. Winsor is relatively safe, but there are dangers you should be aware of before you visit.
Dangerous Areas of Town
Windsor is a college town and an industrial city. Residents are friendly, but they won’t tolerate rude or belligerent visitors. The bars are numerous and there are many options for entertainment. The local police generally leave tourists alone, but don’t give them a reason to arrest you. Like anywhere, police won’t hesitate to lock you up if they catch you buying drugs, are publicly intoxicated, or if you’re involved in a fist fight. Enjoy yourself, but be respectful to the locals.
Downtown Windsor is where most the best restaurants, bars, and hotel are located. University District, near campus, and Walkerville are two particularly lively neighborhoods. The section of the city west of Ambassador Bridge and Huron Church Road, as well as Drouillard, and the Sandwich District, are to be avoided. Drug dealers frequent these spots, so be aware.
Swim with Caution
While most people don’t need to be told, swimming in the Detroit River isn’t a good idea. The currents are swift and large boats cross the river all times of the day. Tourists who want to go for a swim are directed to nearby Lake Erie. The lake stays busy most of the summer, but shuts down in the fall, winter, and spring. Lake Erie is safer than the Detroit River, but it’s not without its own hazards. Don’t venture too far out into the water and always keep an eye on young children.
Winter Weather
Windsor, like Detroit, is notorious for its nasty winters. If you’re in the city during this time of year, pack plenty of coats, boots, gloves, and hats. Drivers should take extra caution and make sure their vehicles are equipped to get around in the snow and ice.
