Canada is one of the largest countries in the world by area. This highly diverse place has some glorious cities. One such place is Quebec, the center of the French speaking peoples of Canada.

Founded over four centuries ago, today the province of Quebec combines modern vibrancy with a tremendous sense of tradition. This is a great way to experience French culture without visiting France. Just walking around the area offers a chance to see one of the oldest European settlements in all of North America.

The Area Below the Cliffs

Quebec is one of the largest provinces of Canada. Many people choose to focus closely on Quebec City. Home to nearly a million people, Quebec City makes a fine place to explore on foot. The Vieux or old part of Quebec City lies below the cliffs of the city. This is where you’ll find many shops, restaurants, art galleries and elegant older buildings. Murals are also on display here on many walls illustrating scenes from city life. The Rue St. Paul is lined with antique shops, making it the perfect place to find handmade items. Stroll down the  Rue de Petit Champlain, the main square. You can also pop into the Rue sous-le-fort for several places with lots of cafes. For a fabulous views across the St. Lawrence river, sit down by Terrasse Dufferin. The old part can be accessed on foot but the route can be very steep. Fortunately, there is a cheap funicular that makes it easy to get back up the hill. Guided tours are available and typically take about two hours. This part of the city also comes alive at night when lights flood the area and you’ll find lots of places to have a terrific French meal.

The Hills Above

Originally founded as a fort, Quebec has a hilly area with magnificent views. Perhaps the most iconic structure in the area is the turreted Chateau Frontenac. If you don’t want to stay in the enormous hotel, you can still tour it and get a vivid look at the luxurious interior. There’s a bar and lounge where you can grab a quick snack. Another regional must-see are the high Montmorency Falls. A public bus will bring you to the top of the falls. There are many hiking trails for those who want an even better look. You can take a wooden staircase that will bring you down for a better view. A cable car brings right you right back up. Another popular public space in the area are the Plains of Abraham. This broad green space above the hills of Quebec is where British and American soldiers clashed during the Revolutionary War. There are two museums here; one is the Museum of Fine Arts, while the other recounts the battles that took place during the war.
