Kuwait Warnings and Dangers
Kuwait is an emir-ruled country known for its deeply conservative Islamic culture. It’s located in a very hot part of the world known for some pretty extreme weather.
Weather
Every so often, sandstorms will blow across the Kuwaiti landscape. Although they are typically minor, you’ll want to wear protective eyewear if you need to venture out while these storms are occurring. Also, be sure you wear a scarf or something that will help you breathe. As Kuwait is surrounded by deserts, even small winds can bring sands into the city. During these times, even after short walks in the street, you will feel sand between your teeth. You can wear protective clothing, but tourists are advised to stay indoors on such days.
The rains in Kuwait come rarely, but when they do, can create a disaster. There are construction sites all over Kuwait that can become bogged down, a situation that isn’t helped by the poor drainage systems..
Culture
Kuwait is an Arabic country, but the English language is widely spoken in many places. However, most of the English speakers here are not native English speakers. If English is your native language, it’s best to speak slowly and clearly when in Kuwait. This will help so that you are better understood. In other cases, you may have difficulty understanding individuals with Asian or Arabic accents. Some workers, such as cleaners, porters, drivers, and housemaids, as well as the elderly, often cannot speak English.
Also remember that Kuwait is an Islamic country. Any seasoned traveler should know that regardless of where you visit, you should respect the local customs, laws, religion, and beliefs. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited, but you don’t have to look to hard to find either locally made or smuggled alcoholic beverages. Be warned, however, that you will be arrested for either possession of, or for being intoxicated from, alcohol.
Massive Sandstorms
This part of the globe is often subject to sudden dust storms. These storms can pop up at any moment at any time of the year without warning. Dust storms can trigger asthma attacks or allergies, so take cover if one comes. It’s a good idea to bring an umbrella everywhere you go to provide temporary shelter.
Stay Away From Animals
Camels are used as transport methods in many parts of Kuwait. They spit and may try to bite you, so do not pet them or go near their mouths. Stray cats are can carry fleas and other diseases so so not attempt to pet them.
Traveling During Ramadan
This period of fasting varies from year to year. During this time, eating during daylight hours is prohibited. This rule applies to non-Muslims as well. Ramadan is not always at the same time every year, so make sure you know when it will happen. Be aware that even sipping water or chewing gum is not allowed. If you are seen eating or drinking anything you may face huge fines and even potential jail time.
Observe the Dress and Alcohol Codes
Dress codes are very conservative here and even men should avoid shorts and short sleeved shirts. Women should cover their hair and their bodies at all times, even on the beach. Public nudity in any place, the beach included, is not accepted. Keep in mind that alcohol is also not allowed anywhere and you should not bring alcohol into the country. It’s a crime that can get you kicked out of the country or jailed.
