Machu Picchu – What to Pack on Your Trip

A trek to Machu Picchu in Peru is on many a bucket list. It’s a place of great mystery, adventure, and history. Machu Picchu means hiking and exposure to heat, cold and sometimes rain, so it’s important to be prepared. Here are tips to help you pack for an unforgettable trip.

Luggage

You’ll need to carry a pack with you, even on a day trip. You should bring a change of socks and an extra T shirt. You’ll also want to pack sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses and water. The trek can be strenuous, consider packing some high-protein snacks and drink lots of water. If you’re spending time at a hotel, leave the carry-on in your room for obvious reasons.

Clothing and Protective Gear

Macchu Picchu is no place for high fashion. Clothing should be comfortable, durable and lightweight. You’ll need comfortable hiking shoes and pants. Generally you’ll want to avoid jeans.

Dress in layers. You may be chilly, but as the day wears on you’ll get warm. The sun can be brutal at high elevation. You may wish to bring a light jacket depending on the time of year. At the least, buy one of the dollar ponchos that can be found at local stores in case you run into rain.

You will need to bring your passport in order to enter the national park. A dry bag for wet clothes is also advisable. Finally, don’t forget to bring your camera. You’ll want extra memory, a good lens or two, an extra battery, and a waterproof cover for your pack to protect gear from getting wet in the rain.
