As a visitor, it’s understandable that you may be seeking to take home a few souvenirs. But when you’re shopping, you need to make sure you’re in a safe environment. Many travelers have experienced situations where market employees invite them upstairs. While this may seem like a great invitation or exclusive viewing for you, do not take the risk.

This tactic of luring tourists away from the general public can be a diversion to take advantage of them. This includes robbery, kidnapping, or forcing the victim into the sex trade. Another dangerous situation to avoid in Hong Kong is when a police raid happens while victims are being lured to the upstairs area. You do not want to be considered an accomplice to a crime.

No matter how nice the store employees or store owners may be, for your safety, politely say no to such invitations. If you are not able to see the product on the main level, that is an immediate red flag to leave as soon as possible.
