Parks and Gardens
Yuexiu Park is the place to see the Ming Dynasty city wall. While much of the wall was destroyed during a revolution in the early 1900’s, you can still see the carvings that tell different stories throughout history. The park also has the sculpture of the Five Rams and the Zhenhai Tower, and is a great place to experience tranquility and learn more about China’s history. You can also visit the Orchid Gardens for a fabulous stroll, which has more than 200 varieties of the beautiful flower plus a tearoom for refreshments as you take in the natural splendor. Renmin Park and Mingchun Bird Valley have also been recommended for their beauty and educational value.
Daily Trading in Guangzhou
The Qing Ping Market is a chance to witness how daily life is conducted in Guangzhou, as local traders set up their stalls. One warning though is some travelers find it unsettling to see the conditions the live animals are put in (the same complaint was also made of the city zoo.) Another major trading spot is the Pearl River which you can sail to see historical buildings, shipbuilding yards and the many municipalities in the area. The night cruise is particularly recommended to witness the city lights.
Temples, Museums, and Mausoleums
The Six Banyan (or Liu Rong Temple) was built during the Song Dynasty in the 400’s AD, and with 1500 years of history, and is a popular place for worship. Surrounded by banyan trees, the temple also contains statues and artifacts from the many different dynasties. Other notable temples are the Temple of the Five Celestial Beings Temple and the Guangxiao Temple The Museum of the Mausoleum of the Nanyue King is the largest tomb from the Western-Han dynasty from the early 100s BC. Bao Mo Park has incredible architecture, and is a great place to take a picnic and learn more about the culture of the area. You can also see the Guangzhou Insurrectional Martyr Cemetery Park to honor those who died during the insurrection of the Communist party in 1927.
