Palermo Warnings and Dangers
Palmero, like other cities, has its share of crime and things to watch out for while visiting. Know the risks so you can prepare and be safe during your trip.
Pickpockets
When reading about Palmero, you might see warnings about crime and pickpockets. Don’t let this put you off, it’s an interesting city and you can stay safe and protect yourself and your possessions if you stay on guard.
- Keep wallets out of sight, place it in your front pants pocket or an inside jacket pocket.
- Keep purses secure and don’t carry money or credit cards in your bags.
- Don’t openly carry your cameras while getting from place to place (this screams tourist and makes you more of a target).
- Don’t wear lots of jewelry or carry designer bags.
Crowded areas like the markets will always attract pickpockets, take extra care with your valuables there and in other situations such as crowded buses. Also, watch for people hanging out on street corners. There are many organized pick-pocketing groups who work classic scams to rob people; some of them use motor scooters.
Never Walk Alone
If going out at night, take a taxi. And, most importantly, try to avoid going anywhere alone. Stay with your traveling companions or, if you are alone, always stay in view of a crowd. Locals are your best allies. Palermo is a city full of friendly and helpful people and you’ll find they often gesture you to be careful. Staying with others will ensure your safety from those who might not have such good intentions. Also be careful in dimly lit areas.
Driving or Walking in Palermo
There are some crazy drivers in this city, so be aware and on alert any time you are driving or walking. Pedestrian crossings are almost meaningless, you need to head straight for the gaps and show no fear. Or failing that, hang around until somebody who looks like they know what they’re doing starts to cross and run after them. Despite the risks walking, it’s probably still easier than driving; if you can avoid it, it’s probably best to do so. It’s easy to get lost in Palermo.
Bottom line, always play it safe. While the crime issue in Palermo has improved over the years, it’s still important not to be complacent.
