Edmonton Things to Do
With beautiful scenery and a bustling downtown area, you’ll find plenty of things to do in the small city of Edmonton. Use these top tips to plan your trip.
History
Stop by Fort Edmonton for a fun glimpse into Edmonton’s past. Here, you’ll get to see how the town grew over the years. In particular, you’ll want to walk down the three different streets outside. These are replicas of what Edmonton looked like in 1885, 1905, and 1920.
At the Royal Alberta Museum, you’ll get to explore various aspects of the history of Alberta, including artifacts from Native peoples and fossils to show the natural history of the past.
Shopping
If you’re ready to shop til you drop, there’s no place better than the West Edmonton Mall. In fact, it’s the number one attraction in Alberta. Housing hundreds of shops and restaurants, you’ll be able to find just about anything you need. Best of all, there are plenty of fun activities beyond shopping, including an indoor waterpark and kiddie rides.
Nature
When the weather’s nice, head out to Hawrelak Park. It has walking trails, playgrounds, and picnic areas. During the summers, you can rent paddle boats to use on the man-made lake in the center of the park. When the lake is frozen in the winter, you can ice skate on it. The Mill Creek Ravine offers great views during your hikes, especially in the fall when the leaves are changing colors.
Family Travel in Edmonton
If you’re traveling with kids, you’ll find plenty of fun things to do around the city. There are over 350 animals to see at the Edmonton Valley Zoo, including monkeys, zebras, and elephants. Kids can ride paddle boats and a carousel in the summers, but these attractions can close due to inclement weather. Check before you go. The Telus World of Science is also a great place to spend the day. They offer a wide variety of hands-on science exhibits, helping kids learn things like how to program a robot or track storms. It’s open every day of the year except Christmas.
