Vancouver Warnings and Dangers
Vancouver is a bustling seaport and entertainment center in British Columbia, Canada. Vancouver is renowned worldwide for its unrivaled natural beauty and diverse culture, but it shouldn’t be taken lightly. Be aware of the dangers and heed warnings from travelers who came before you.
Weather
The weather in Vancouver, as in most of Canada, can get pretty nasty in the winter. Snow, rain, sleet, and overcast afternoons are common here. Before you head to the city, make sure you have packed plenty of warm clothes, coats, hats, and gloves. The climate is similar to the weather in Seattle and Portland in the United States. In the summer, the weather is very inviting and allows tourists to hike, fish, and head out on the ocean to watch for whales, bald eagles, and beautiful vistas of nearby mountains. The whale watching tours are highly recommended, but can be expensive and also damp and cold if you are out on the water in the spring and fall.
Wildlife
Vancouver is a short drive from countless hiking trails and ski slopes. While in the mountains, streams, and on the ocean, remember you share this area with the wildlife. Bears, cougars, elk, salmon, and bald eagles thrive in this area of the world. Always clean up after yourself if you go on a hike and don’t approach an animal in the wild.
Crime
Unfortunately, crime is a constant concern in Vancouver. When in the city, keep your personal belongings close by at all times. While not verified, some claim Vancouver has the highest car break-in rate in North America. Whether that’s true or not, what’s not in dispute is that here thieves do target cars. As you likely would where you live, always lock your car before you walk away. Another way to be prepared is to pre-determine where you plan to park. Consult a map and locate areas of the city where crime isn’t as much of an issue and park there.
