Things to Do in Muar, Malaysia

Muar Things to Do

The town of Muar, Malaysia is a lively place with a rich history and culture. One of the most popular tourist attractions in the country, it is noted for offering delicious food and coffee as well as impressive historical sites.

Muar is a chance to enjoy many regional foods as well as explore a town with brightly colored buildings everywhere you look. Enjoy activities such as folk dancing, coffee tasting or just strolling the historic streets.

Local Coffee

Muar is home to many local factories that produce high-quality coffee. The local coffee is renowned across much of Malaysia and the rest of the world. You can get to know the area’s coffee directly with a coffee tasting. Many coffee shops here offer lots of local brews. You can sample several of them in a single sitting. Coffee is often served with toasted bread and boiled eggs. Sampling coffees with bread and eggs make the perfect way to start your day.

Sampling the Cuisine

In Muar, the regional Javanese cuisine can be sampled as street food as well as fine dining. If you like fish, try the otak-otak. This is fish paste usually made from mackerel. Seasoned heavily with spices such as turmeric, lemon grass, garlic, shallots and chilies, the mixture is combined with coconut milk, wrapped in a leaf and then grilled or steamed. Another popular street food are Chinese donuts, otherwise known as “fried ghost.” Dip the pipping hot fried dough into coffee for a snack.

Take a Walk

Muar is a very walkable city. The promenade on the Muar River makes a popular place to take a stroll. Here you’ll find lots of benches where you can watch people and grab a snack under a shady tree. Kite flying here is a popular thing to do on weekends: Look for brightly colored kites overhead, or you can buy your own and join in. Buildings on many streets are one uniform color: you’ll see some streets where all the buildings are a pale red or a light green or soft yellow.

Historic Buildings

Many historic buildings form an integral part of the cityscape here: English architecture meets the local Malaysian style in buildings like the Bangunan Sultan Abu Bakar, the Muar Court House, and the Muar English School. You may see people folk dancing in the streets here. They will welcome you if you choose to join in.
